Surface mount technology is related to electronic circuits where electronic circuits are constructed with components mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards. In this technology, it is possible to mount components on both the sides of a board. Surface mounted devices include both active and passive electronic components. These components lack connecting wires and hence are called leadless components. This technology is better than through-hole technology, since this consumes lesser area, high packing density, easy automation, economical, high resistance to shock and vibration and can be used for high frequency applications. Rectangular and cylindrical shaped SMD resistors are available in the market. Rectangular shaped SMD resistors are fabricated by thick film technique. For this, a ceramic substrate is employed. IEC E 24 is a widely used SMD resistor. SMD capacitors, SMD diodes and SMD transistors are some other devices which use this technology.
