Central office design in digital switching systems


Central office is an important part of a digital switching system. A central office which is also known as exchange is a large complex system with many subsystems. Each subsystem carry unique characteristics and functionality. Telephone services is an important service to mankind nowadays and since digital switching system is an integral part of telephone services, utmost care has to be taken for the fine analysis of such systems. In a digital switching system, central office is linked to main distribution frame, trunk distribution frame, power plant, carrier facilities, digital X-connect and special services. Main distribution frame is a location where all lines and other related links are cross connected to a central office switch. This location is labour extensive and all the lines from subscribers terminates here. Trunk distribution frame is a location where all trunks and other related links are cross connected to central office. Main distribution frame is referred as line side of the switch and trunk distribution frame as trunk side of the switch. Power converters, battery systems and emergency power sources are included in the power plant. Carrier facilities component provide carrier facilities between central office and other parts of the network. Digital X-connect which is a small switching system for trunks provides automatic assignments and cross-connection of trunks to digital switching systems. Special service provides extra services like data services and wireless services.
